With identity theft such a large problem these days, spyware is now widely recognized as one of the fastest growing threats on the Internet. Why? Because unlike computer viruses, spyware is potentially profitable. "Polite" spyware will only monitor the websites you visit or gather the email addresses from your Outlook Contacts database for the purpose of spamming. There is another class of spyware called keyloggers. This type of spyware records every keystroke made on the computer while it is active, seeking to capture passwords, credit card numbers and other such sensitive information. But why stop there? Once spyware has a foothold in your computer it could potentially upload every file in the system. ...but you probably already know that, so I'm preaching to the converted.

So is any spyware hiding in your PC? It is simple to find out. Many anti-spyware programs will allow you to perform a free scan of your system, but there are a few things to watch out for. Some anti-spyware, made by disreputable developers, is made to signal many false-positives, scaring the user into believing she has far more spyware in the computer than she really has. Some anti-spyware can itself be difficult to uninstall, which makes it little better than the spyware it supposedly protects you from. Stick to quality software from reputable companies and you will easily avoid such problems.
